SOLD TO CAROL FENSHOLT - I HAVE PARTED WITH A FABULOUS HORSE, BUT GAINED A WONDERFUL NEW FRIEND.
aka Cha Cha Cordero
A fantasy horse. A breeder's and rider's dream.
<Carol Fensholt and
Callista - a fairy
tale come true. Callista arrived in New Jersey in great shape. Carol sent
this story the day after her arrival ...
You have to picture this: I have a
white picket fence all around my front yard, which is a "dog-free" zone (sort
of, as about half the dogs have figured out how to climb over the fence). Inside
is my garden, a lawn ringed with colorful impatiens, steps leading up to a
brick patio under a huge tree, on which there is a wrought-iron table and
chairs. Anyway, we just had the fence painted, so I had left the gate open
about four inches, just wide enough for the dogs to slip through without having
to climb the fence and scratch the new paint. When I heard the dogs barking, I
went downstairs and looked out the front door -- and there was Callista! She had
pulled the gate open wide (with that prehensile upper lip of hers, no doubt),
had walked up the stairs and was standing on the patio amid the furniture,
looking at me with her ears up as if the say, "It is margarita time, isn't it?"
I tell you, Carla, I laughed so hard I could have cried! Then I went down, took her by the halter, turned
her around and escorted her back down the steps, out the gate, down the gravel
driveway and back to the lower lawn. She started to graze, but when I turned to
walk back up to the house, she followed. I thought, What can I do to distract
her? About halfway up is an apple tree, and the branches are loaded with apples,
so heavy they hang no more than four feet off the ground. So, holding the
branches out to her so that she could eat a few apples from it, I taught her to
pick her own apples -- which I left her,
happily doing. About 3 p.m., I decided to make a run to FedEx. Being busy
with the magazine, I hadn't had anything to eat, so I grabbed an apple out of
the fridge, and went downstairs to the back door, where one of the cars was
parked. As I rounded the corner into the mud room, what did I spy through the
outer door but that great baroque profile -- Callista again, standing right at
the back door, "parked" right alongside the car! When I walked out, she
immediately spied the apple in my hand (you'd think she would have been sick of
apples by then), and reached for it, as if to say, "That is for me, isn't it?"
How could I say no? So I bit pieces off it, half for her, half for me, then
turned her around, walked her away from the car, and got in and drove off, while
she watched me as if to say, "I was standing right here -- and you took the
CAR?"
